Key findings

State rails have won the base layer

In India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Cambodia, payments run on near-free national rails. Wallets compete on top of them rather than replacing them.

The money is in what sits on top

With payments free, profits come from lending, wealth and merchant services. Sea’s loan book reached USD 9.2 billion at the end of 2025, up 80%.

Wallet markets consolidate

GCash, PayPay and MoMo lead their markets, and PhonePe and Google Pay handle about 80% of UPI. Indonesia remains a three-way contest.

Public markets are the exit

PayPay and Mynt listed in 2026, with PhonePe and Toss next in line, resetting valuations for every Asian fintech still private.

Cross-border and digital money

ASEAN had 29 cross-border QR and P2P links by December 2025, Project Nexus targets 2027, and Hong Kong licensed its first stablecoin issuers in April 2026.
